A New Project Begins

I got started today on a object I had been thinking about for some time. I have a wood turned “fruit bowl” that my father made maaaaaany years ago, and that I haven’t really found a good use for. I decided it would made a good garden.

Steve cut a piece of plywood to fit. I needed to add a couple of shims for a good fit. (Dad would definately approve of shims.)

I drew on my layout idea and started off by making polymer clay ferns. The project is going to be 1/2 inch to the foot.

All that is left is to trim the thatch over the window, glue down the clay character, and do the spine label.

Miniature tree house almost done

I hadn’t realized it had been so long since I had posted until Ruth and Don started ragging on me about it. Here is a catch up on my miniature project.

See picture from the book that I am trying to reproduce and my progress. I just need to add one or two windows and thatching over the windows and door and I’m finished. The hardest part is fitting stuff to the tree, which is why I’ve kept putting it off.

Planting at Montezuma

We had a fun morning working with the MARSH crew at Montezuma. They are turning a soybean field into a forest. Species included tulip trees, cedar, sycamore, red maple and bur oak.

Scott had drilled holes. We planted, put a tube over, staked it in place and put a net hat on top. The hat keeps birds from falling in. The tube has acts as a green house but has holes near the bottom so the tree stays dormant through the winter.

We had a great time. Afterward lunch was provided. Andrea made pumpkin macaroni and cheese. It was great.

Bear Swamp State Forest

Last Sunday, being an exceptionally beautiful November day, Steve and I took off to explore Bear Swamp State Forest. Ruth and Don had stayed there last summer and raved about it. It is at the SW end of Skaneatales Lake.

It has several nice trails through a variety of habitats. We walked for about 3 hours. Hoped to see more birds, but were pleased to hear a raven.

After our hike we headed to Skaneatales for lunch at Doug’s Fish Fry. We can recommend it.

Clearly I haven’t been keeping up with life as we know it in the blogosphere. I really am here, and really keeping myself out of trouble. Though I haven’t been keeping away from the TV as much as I’d like.

Steve and I have both been volunteering over at Montezuma. This morning we were helping with a bird flush count. They drive the airboat through the marsh while we observe and record what gets flushed into the air. It’s a fun bunch of people to work with and always interesting.

Since I retired I have a renewed interest in cooking. It’s quite different when you have time. I spend a lot of time just looking for interesting recipes.

My project for this afternoon is to come up with a costume for Cindy and Mike’s post apocalyptic Halloween party.

I kind of lost interest in the photo a day project. I guess that’s obvious since I haven’t posted anything since August. Oh well, we’ll just have to see what amuses me next.
